Odeon Leicester Square


The Odeon circuit was started by Oscar Deutsch in 1930

It was brought by J Arthur Rank in 1942 and was part of the Rank Organisation until 1998

At it’s peak it had over 600 cinemas in the United Kingdom, plus Pinewood film studios, Rank Film Labs, and Rank Film Distributers (RFD)

Urban myth: The initials ODEON stand for

Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation
The circuit was probably named ‘Odeon’ after the Greek Ampitheatre on the slopes of
the Acropolis at Athens
The Odeon Leicester Square was built on the site of the Alhambra Music Hall and opened 2nd November 1937
