The pulleys, when in use, would have ropes going around them to raise & lower scenery, lighting barrels etc
This was done from stage level on counterbalanced ropes
The small spaces between the metal battens was about five inches, and the larger spaces were about fourteen inches
so it was possible to see down onto the stage about forty feet below
The motor for the Safety Curtain was also located on this floor, but was operated from stage level
