At this time there were only to film certificates
U & A
U = Suitable for all ages
A = 16 year olds or above unaccompanied, or if you were under 16, to be accompanied by a person over the age of 16
In the 1950s the X certificate was introduced
This meant that you had to be 16 or over to see the film
Also introduced in the 1950s was the short lived H certificate
This was the same as an X cert but it warned you about the content of the film
